Men's Dance Classes: Helping Guys Hurdle Their Shyness of Dancing

Dancing has always been one of the foremost recreational and social activities of both men and women. This statement was especially true during the time when technological advancements such as various electronic gadgets, appliances, and the internet were still pipe dreams grasped only by the wily minds of science fiction authors. Young people specifically flocked to establishments such as ballrooms, discos, and eventually, nightclubs, because dancing also enables them to bond and socialize with other people who share their love for moving to the music. But this does not mean that it has already been cast by the wayside in this day and age, for there are still many people who enjoy dancing, and many social events and gatherings today involve and incorporate this method of artistic expression.
But while there are many women who enjoy dancing and can move gracefully whilst doing so, there are not as many men who are, which is probably due to a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most common reason as to why there are many men who are shy whenever the subject of dancing comes to the fore is that they believe that it goes against their masculinity or the macho image that they have. Another probable reason when it comes to men's shyness when it comes to swaying to the beat is their fear of public embarrassment or their lack of confidence whenever they take the floor.
Thankfully, a solution presents itself in the form of men's dance classes, which will enable men to learn and perfect different styles so that they will be able to conquer their fear of stepping out and showing their moves. One of the advantages of enrolling in lessons for men is that guys will have the chance to learn moves and styles from professional instructors themselves, who will patiently teach them until they have mastered each step. Those who choose to enroll in men's dance classes will also have the luxury to choose which style to learn and master, and will be taken under the wing of seasoned professionals which is why a lot of males who wish to conquer their fear enrol in these types of classes.
But in the end, men who are only beginning to learn how to boogie should realize that making mistakes is part of learning, and they should learn to merely laugh at them rather than beat themselves over it and take it seriously. Aside from enrolling in men's dance classes, men should, above all, believe in themselves that they can do just as well as anyone else, in order for them to fully conquer their shyness when it comes to strutting their stuff.

Reasons for a New Teacher in Couples Dancing

Introduction
Have you wondered if your current dance teacher is not right for you? You might be thinking that the reason why you are not progressing as fast as you could is because of your dance teacher. Maybe you think the reason why you're not enjoy dance as much as you hoped is because of your dance teacher. Certainly couples dancing, the amount you enjoy it and how quickly you learn, is all heavily dependent upon your teacher. In this article I will go over the nature of the student teacher relationship and how understanding this relationship can help you work out if you need a new teacher.
The student teacher relationship
The first thing that is most important to realise is that there really is no such thing as a good teacher or a good student. There is really only such thing as a good student teacher relationship. Admittedly, some people can teach in many different types of relationship and some people can learn in many different relationships. We might be inclined to say these people are good teachers and students respectively, but it is still the relationship that is important. This is important to realise because it allows us to deal with the relationship and not any individual.
What do you want from dance?
I recall talking to a fellow student who danced because she wanted a break from work. She was an executive woman who was thinking all day and taking on many challenges. The last thing she wanted as another challenge in her life. So when her instructor said to her 'If your dance is not improving, then I am failing as a teacher', she felt a lot of the fun in dance evaporate. In truth, she probably wanted to be pushed around the dance floor for an hour a week by a man who knew what he was doing and maybe who would offer the occasional pointer on how to improve.
I also recall another fellow dance student who started going to technique classes because he felt the his usual classes, while being enjoyable, were not helping him develop as much as he wanted. He definitely needed a challenge in his life and dance was what he wanted to provide him with that.
The above two examples show to extremes, but even that might not cover what you want. Do you like learning about lots of dances; do you like to know about their history; do you simply want to dance better than others; do you simply want to be able to say you can dance; have you reached a new level that needs a new approach to teaching (this is often the hardest one to realise because it happens slowly)? Chances are you want a mix of these and some other things out of couples dancing.
Before you can determine if you need to change instructors you need to be clear about what you want. It's also worth noting if this is different from what you once wanted too. Things change. If your teacher is not suitable for what you want out of dance, then that is a reason to change.
Changing your teacher first
You will be surprised how responsive a teacher might be when you talk about what you feel you're not getting. Step one is to tell them what you want, but feel you're not getting. How you word this is up to you, but I good start is 'I feel like I can't.... as well as I would like' or 'I feel like we are not... as we could be'. See how in each case you actually never said anything directly about the teacher. This can help you raise a concern without feeling like you are criticizing anyone, which we sometimes have troubles doing. Then see what they say. Typically, they will want to accommodate you, and you might find that they will start to ask if you want things to change.
Another option is to take advantage of their wisdom. Sometimes they forget what they know. Try this line 'I have a question: how can I...?' This will open up the dialogue, and you will possibly find that it will allow you to raise many other concerns that can be dealt with. This will then potentially lead to a better relationship for you.
When it is time to change
If you feel that the above just hasn't helped, then you need to change. You are now clear about what you want, and you have determined that you dance teacher is not giving you want you need.
The first thing to do is make sure that you do not go from bad to worse. Make sure that you have some idea of who you would like to change to. If it's a teacher at another school, then it's easy to check this out behind the scenes. If it's at the same school, then you need an excuse. The easiest one is saying you feel that you're not as skilled at dancing with a diversity of partners as you should be and ask how you could organise a lesson with another instructor. This should be easy to do. Next say that the change has helped and you would like to stick with it for a while. There, you've made a change and left the door open for a return.
The fallout
In reality, you might be a bit disappointed that your dance teacher is not more upset about losing you than they are. They have many students and have been teaching for years. They have seen it all before, and they know that sometimes students just need to move on. I have seen a few people change and there has been no issue. Actually, if anything it seems to form a friendship and you get one teacher plus another free consultant.
One last thing to remember
Most dance schools have good management that can deal with this. If the teacher has seen a lot, then you can imagine what the manager of a couples dance school has seen. Management is usually another place you can go to talk about your desire to change. They will also often manage it for you too if you would rather that. If you feel that the management can't, then you do not need to change teachers; you need to change studios.

The Health Benefits of Dancing

The Benefits of Dancing
Dancing has countless benefits, both physical and mental.
Physically, dancing is excellent for nearly everyone. It is a great cardiovascular workout, which strengthens the heart and improves lung function.
A couple months of regular dancing and you'll not only help to extend your life span but you will likely find that you can walk farther distances and don't get tired climbing stairs any more.
Improved cardiovascular function also helps to lower cholesterol and helps to lower blood pressure.
The best part of improving your cardiovascular function is that it will help you to slow the aging process. Who wouldn't want that?
Dancing also helps to strengthen your muscles which is beneficial for a couple of reasons.
Strong muscles make you less prone to injury, and for women it can help avoid developing osteoporosis.
Improved flexibility and balance is another benefit of regular dancing. Improving flexibility is another way to avoid injury to joints. Improved balance helps to strengthen the nervous system.
And what is the benefit of dancing that tends to be everyone's favorite? The answer to that is simple - it makes you more attractive!
Think about it... you're burning calories and losing excess weight, you're toning your muscles, your core strength is improved so you're standing taller... you are getting better looking with every passing week that you are dancing regularly.
Over and above the physical benefits, there are emotional benefits that are just as important.
Many studies have shown that regular exercise stimulates brain chemicals that can leave you feeling more relaxed and happy.
For people who suffer from anxiety and depression disorders this is especially helpful as regular exercise helps to regulate the chemicals in the brain that help to avoid depression and anxiety.
Believe it or not, dancing even helps to improve your brain function. The act of using your brain to memorize the steps in a dance helps to stimulate your brain. This type of stimulation has been shown to help avoid deterioration of brain function as people age.
Dancing is almost guaranteed to boost your self esteem. You will be physically more attractive which will make you feel better about yourself, and you will have the sense of accomplishment that comes with learning a new skill.
Dancing is a social exercise, which means you will be either getting out and spending time connecting with your friends, or getting out and making new friends.
Having an active social life has been shown to result in people feeling generally happier and more satisfied with their life and their family.
If you have a spouse, dancing is a great way to connect with your partner.
The physical exercise combined with the sense of fun and adventure make it a great activity to do as a couple.
If you do not have a spouse, dancing is a great way to get out there and meet someone. There are lots of clubs and places where people gather to dance and it's a great place to meet someone with whom you already have something in common.
So in summary, this is an activity that will help you live longer, make you stronger, make you feel better about yourself and either help you connect with your partner or help you find a new partner.
How could anyone not love dance?

Take Your Dancing To New Heights Through Better Breathing

When learning to dance, first we concentrate on learning patterns, hearing the beat and maintaining communication with our partner. However, after we become familiar with the patterns we want to dance, are able to dance on beat, and are comfortable leading and/or following your partner, the next steps to mastership are actually less mechanical in nature.
Advanced concepts in dancing has more to do with attunement and flow of energy. We need to get our body in a receptive mode and the way to do that is through proper breathing.
The importance of proper breathing is prevalent in any skill we want to develop, whether playing the piano, martial arts or dancing. It helps you to relax and perform at a higher level.
Developing good breathing habits will not only improve your dance skills, but it will give you more stamina and control in any activity you choose.
The first thing we can do to improve our breathing is to become more aware of it. Start concentrating on the depth and rhythm of your breathing without trying to change it. Then, slowly increase the range of your inhalation and exhalation.
Also, proper posture improves our breathing naturally. Keep your shoulders back and your head straight allowing the chest to open up and your rip cage to expand and contract freely.
Here are three simple exercises to help you increase the range of your breathing.
(Disclaimer: Consult your doctor before doing these or any other exercises)
SITING EXERCISE
Seat on a chair with your spine straight
Put one hand on your abdomen and another one on your chest Start inhaling slowly and feel your abdomen fill and expand then fill and expand the chest Start exhaling slowly allowing the chest to contract and then contract the abdomen
Do not over strain the breathing, allow it to grow naturally.
WALKING EXERCISE
When going for a walk you can use each step as a count.
Inhale during a count of four steps Hold during a count of eight Exhale during a count of twelve
Maintaining the same ratio, you can increase or reduce your breathing range to suit your comfort zone. You can reduce the numbers to 2, 4, 8 or you could increase them to 6, 12, 18.
LYING ON BED EXCERCISE
Lay on your back and do some belly breathing. Let the air go directly to your abdomen area and expand it during inhalation and contract it during exhalation
Inhale during a count of four Hold for two Exhale during a count of four Hold for two
When going to bed this exercise will help you relax and fall seep quickly.
A common thing we see in dancing is people not able to dance through a song or two without getting out of breath. These exercises will help you overcome that problem and allow you to take your dancing to new heights with proper breathing. So, next time you dance don't forget to breathe.
Happy Dancing,

Unanticipated Benefits of Belly Dancing

Belly dancing is the modern term for a dance that originated in the Middle East. To many people, hearing these words brings in images of women in a flowy and bright costume and dancing to some lively music. But to some, belly dancing goes beyond dance or entertainment. It also has unanticipated benefits, and here are some of them.
For one, belly dancing, being an activity that requires physical movement, is a good way to burn fats without the pressure of going to the gym or working out. And since it requires a lot of movements in the belly, those who want to get rid of their unwanted stomach fats can start seeing positive results in as short as 2 or 3 weeks. And the best part is, since this weight-loss process is disguised as a dance, one loses excess fats in a fun and interesting way.
Also, since many of the movements involve proper hand coordination and shaking of the upper body, belly dancing helps in the prevention of osteo-related diseases especially on the spine, torso, and the upper body. And because most of the movements require twisting, shaking, and wiggling, it can also increase the body's flexibility. Also, if you're suffering from menstrual problems such as irregular periods, learning this dance will help you address these issues.
But aside from its health benefits, it can also play an important role in building a person's confidence and self-esteem. The movements, which are feminine in nature, focus on the proper coordination of all the parts of the body. Therefore, learning the steps will make you more aware of your posture, hand and foot gestures, and even your facial expressions. All of this will give you a sense of self-image, which ultimately results to an improvement of your self-confidence.
Moreover, it is a good way to relieve stress. This dance can help relax both your body and mind. So whether you're dancing because you want to forget a problem or you want to rid your body of toxins, you can rely on this dance to achieve your objective.
Last, belly dancing develops, builds, and nurtures strong relationships. When you take dance classes, you'll get to mingle with other women who may share the same problems, interests, and issues. With this, you can easily cope with whatever issues you want to address. And if you are a businesswoman, you can build instant connection, create a network, and promote your business.

Why Does Partner Dancing Feel Odd?

Have you ever thought that the way you're asked to move when learning partner feels odd? If you have then you're not alone. Many of us learning dance feel this way. At first, this might not seem like such a big deal. However, when we feel odd doing something, we are unlikely to keep doing it. This means that while we might dance well at first, we will soon regress to way of dancing that feel better, but aren't correct. Ideally, we want the correct way of dancing to feel like the natural way. In this article I will explain why partner dance can feel odd and what can be done to so that this will not adversely affect your dance ability.
A major part of the issue is body language. Many dance moves correspond to bold moves. Or perhaps other strong emotions. If you're not feeling those emotions, then there will be incongruence between what you're doing and feeling. This will definitely make you feel odd.
The other major part of the issue is that we're simply not used to the types of movement that are common to partner dance. This is a lot like when you first put on a pair of shoes and you notice that one is tighter than the other. It's also like when you wear a new watch or stop wearing a watch that you've been wearing for a long time. Another example that is perhaps more pertinent is that of people who still limp after having a hip replacement. The hip doesn't hurt, but they still limp. This isn't as common as it used to be because of better medical care, which in itself shows how hard it can be to change the way we move.
The solution to this issue is basically being aware of the issue. Once we know that feeling odd is OK, and not an indication that we are moving incorrectly, that feeling is less likely to affect the way we dance. Still, to be better partner dancers, we would rather it all feel natural.
The first step is to trust the teacher. When the teacher tells you that you're doing something right, then accept that it is right, no matter how it feels. The same goes for when they say it's not right and it still feels natural. You need to accept that your feel is not as good an indication of good couples dancing as is your teacher's observations.
The second step is to try to take on the emotions of the dance. It's always worth finding out what 'role' you're meant to play in a dance. Are you meant to be bold, submissive, aggressive or desired for example? If you try to take on this emotion, as opposed to whatever you happen to be feeling at the time, then your body language will fit with the dance moves.
The above two steps will do a lot to help. However, it sometimes helps to correlate the physical feeling with the looks. This is why dance studios often have mirrors. Put the effort into looking at yourself in the mirror when dancing or get a video of yourself when couples dancing. It will likely amaze you how different you look from how you thought you would look given how your body felt.
